A Flow Rate Dependent 1D Model for Thermally Stratified Hot-Water Energy Storage

Stratified tank models are used to simulate thermal storage in applications such as residential or commercial hot-water tanks, chilled-water and solar systems. The energy efficiency of these relates the system components level stratification maintained during various flow events tank. One-dimensional (1D) building simulations because short computation time but often do not include flow-rate dependent mixing. accuracy 1D for plug flow, with axial conduction, two convection eddy-diffusivity were compared experimental data sets discharging a 50-gal recharging hot water from an external source. A minimum maximum relationship eddy diffusivity factor found at Re <2100 >10,000 recirculation top vertical tubes inletting cold bottom. root mean square error decreased >4 °C near 2 when considering flow-based mixing heating, while exponential decay diffusion results reduction 1 cone-shaped diffusers that begin relaminarize inlet.
